Kathmandu, 15 April
The Nagdhunga-Sisne Khola major tunnel has made a significant breakthrough, spanning an impressive length of 2,688 meters, achieving this milestone on Monday.
According to Engineer Gobinda Damaru, a senior divisional engineer overseeing the project, it will take approximately another year before traffic can utilize the tunnel route. The project faced delays due to the COVID-19 pandemic and persistent local opposition during its initial construction phases.
Damaru clarified that although the tunnel has reached the breakthrough stage, several tasks remain pending, including lining, equipment installation, and final touches. Upon completion of these tasks, it will require another year before the tunnel becomes operational for traffic. Notably, the project’s emergency (rescue) tunnel had previously achieved a breakthrough on August 6, 2023.
