Nepal boasts a rich tapestry of ethnic diversity, with the Limbu community being just one among its many vibrant groups. Each ethnic community cherishes its distinct expressions and lifestyles, with music serving as a cornerstone of their cultural heritage. Traditional folk melodies narrate the myriad ceremonies and life events, echoing the unique identities within these communities.
In yesteryears, Limbu melodies wove intricate tales of faith, resilience amidst trials, societal disparities, and the clamor for transformation. Yet, Sherma embarked on a divergence from tradition, meandering into the enchanting realm of romantic Limbu harmonies.
Within his compositions, he unfurled avant-garde arrangements, weaving the threads of contemporary sounds and modern instrumentation, thus transcending the conventional confines of Limbu music and nurturing its commercial bloom.
Sherma’s impetus to innovate within the Limbu musical landscape sprang from an ardent longing to liberate himself from the shackles of customary refrains. “I yearned to etch my name by fashioning a creation of novelty,” he muses. “Summoning courage, I embarked on uncharted paths, and serendipitously, fortune smiled upon my endeavor.”
Furthermore, Sherma envisioned Limbu melodies pirouetting their way into the pulsating ambiance of pubs and clubs, where revelers could sway to their cadence—a departure from their customary sanctuaries.
Brabim Sherma: Far Beyond
Brabim Sherma, a prominent figure from the Limbu community, has significantly contributed to the commercialization of Limbu music.
Over the past two decades, he has embarked on a professional singing career, releasing his debut album “Chesung” in 2003 when the Limbu music industry was still burgeoning. Since then, Sherma’s influence has been pivotal in the industry’s flourishing, with over 150 singers now sustaining themselves through Limbu music.
Hailing from Panchthar in Eastern Nepal, Sherma’s musical journey has spanned nine albums and approximately 100 Limbu songs, including revered religious compositions. Initially drawn to singing by the inspiration of Bhagat Subba, a luminary in the Limbu music scene, Sherma’s artistic evolution has been marked by innovation and daring.
His breakout hit, “Nurikang Waye Mimjime,” catapulted Limbu music to new heights in 2016, captivating audiences both within and beyond the Limbu community. Departing from conventional themes, Sherma introduced romantic motifs and modern arrangements, propelling Limbu music into commercial success.
Brabim Sherma Reaching New Heights
Recalling his foray into Limbu music, Sherma reminisces about the varied responses he received. While his music resonated warmly with the general public, some within the Limbu music community expressed concerns about the potential impact of his experimentation on Limbu culture. However, as Sherma’s success skyrocketed, such concerns gradually dissipated.
Currently, Sherma enjoys a widespread following spanning different corners of the globe. Engaged in musical tours for five to six months annually, he dedicates the remaining time to refining his craft in the studio. Alongside Sherma, numerous other artists from the Limbu music scene are making their mark on national and international platforms.
Assessing the growth of the Limbu music industry, Sherma highlights a significant rise in the number of singers, with Limbu music competitions now attracting 500-600 participants annually. He also observes a growing interest from individuals beyond the Limbu community, with many venturing into recording Limbu songs.
Despite challenges, Sherma remains upbeat about the future trajectory of Limbu music.

Despite facing skepticism from traditionalists within the industry, Sherma’s audacious experimentation ultimately won widespread acclaim, paving the way for Limbu music’s global recognition. Today, he commands a devoted following worldwide, staging musical extravaganzas across continents.
Reflecting on the industry’s growth, Sherma underscores the imperative of preserving traditional folk elements amidst the surge of modernization. While contemporary Limbu music thrives, Sherma advocates for equal reverence for its folk roots, lest its cultural essence be diluted.

In a bid to nurture folk traditions, Sherma spearheads the “Hakpari Laye” project, slated for release in two months, featuring 20 editions of folk-inspired compositions.
Emphasizing the intrinsic link between folk music and cultural identity, Sherma implores aspiring musicians to embrace and safeguard this heritage for posterity.
